'Lost In Time', Karl Rehn (CD, 1996) - A CD compliation of the best material from my cassette releases: 'electrophonic', 'Illusion of Competence', and 'decrepitude'.
'et al', Karl Rehn and Friends (CD, 2000) - Released 12/19/00. This CD includes original songs by Karl, Paul Hollis, and Jesse Bradley Jr., and will feature performances by those artists plus Bill Sullivan, Andrew Wimsatt, Michael McMillan and others.
I got involved with music at any early age, taking piano lessons at 5 and guitar lessons at 6. Along the way I learned to play piano, organ, electronic keyboards, acoustic and electric guitar, electric bass, French horn, trumpet, and drums. I've been performing with live bands in Austin since 1981 or so, and I've been producing and independently releasing my original music since 1982. A lot of that material is available in MP3 format here.
I have tapes of junior high and high school band concerts and other recitals. I've got live tapes and demos from most of the cover bands I've played with over the years too. For this list I'm just marking the highlights of my recorded original music output. Some of the material here is (slowly) being remastered and archived in CD format.
'Dadgummit', The Distractions (cassette, 1982) - A rehearsal tape of the band I was in during high school, featuring a 'tribute' to our high school marching band director's annoying behaviors. Other demos and rehearsal tapes are still floating around in my closet.
'Do Not Eat the Glass' and 'Plastic Hormone Frequency', Hello (cassettes, 1982) - 1982 was a busy year. The summer my senior year David Nather, Andrew Wimsatt and I wrote and produced an astonishing 2 hours of original music in 2 months. David and I played all the instruments and Andrew somehow managed to get it on all tape, using 2 stereo tape decks and a powered mixer. Lo-fi but bursting with youthful enthusiasm. 'Do Not Eat the Glass' earned us our first radio airplay. 'I Never Know What to Say' was played on KUT-FM's 'Trendsetters' show. NEW! digitally remastered on CD.
'Telekinetic Grab Bag' and 'Memories of Carlsbad', White Car Band (cassette, 1983) - The White Car Band was literally whoever was in the room when the tape started rolling. WCB was an early experiment in total improvisation and electronic music. WCB 'events' had no written music and no plan. The rules were that we got every instrument and noise-making object in the room we could find, turned off the lights, and hit 'record'.
Balcones Assault (cassette, 1983) - I recorded and produced this compliation of original music written and performed by all the various musicians and bands active at my high school, L.C. Anderson in Austin, Texas.
'Hello's Fourth Album' and 'Unrest' (cassettes, 1983-4) - Follow on projects by David, Andrew and I, with additional guest artists like John Taylor (drums) and Ronnie Moore (lyrics).
'The Baf Ensemble', Baf Ensemble (cassette, 1985) - My first completely solo effort, including the original recordings of 'Untied' and 'Bass Ballad'.
'Labor Day - 2:30 AM', Hello, and 'Hyldham Wind', Baf Ensemble (cassette, 1986) - A 'double album' of sorts, this cassette contained one side of the Hello 'big band', which was an 8 piece band with horn section, including myself (keys, vocals), David Nather (gtr), Todd Hartmann (gtr), Kerry Allen (bass, trumpet), Jim Koughan (trombone), John Taylor (drums), Chris Hartmann (trombone), and John McElhenney (vocals). Side 2 was more solo work, including the original recording of the Hyldham Wind Suite. Also known as the 'Cherry Hello' tape, because the cover was a parody of a box of Cherry Jello.
'electrophonic', Karl Rehn (cassette, 1989) - My first professional quality release, featuring 6 original compositions and 2 arrangements of cover songs. For 'electrophonic' I used 11 keyboards and 2 drum machines, all synchronized and controlled via MIDI, which was still a relatively new technology. 'Suburbia' received airplay on KGSR-FM. 'Reflections', Andrew Wimsatt Ensemble (cassette, 1990) - Studio work with Andrew on a highly polished demo tape of his original songs.
After the completion of 'electrophonic' and 'Reflections', Andrew and I created music videos for 3 songs off each release. Those videos are still in rotation on Austin's ACTV, almost 10 years after they were released.
'The Illusion of Competence', Karl Rehn (cassette, 1991) - This release took over 150 hours in the studio to complete, and integrated sequenced tracks with acoustic instruments. This longer release featured 12 tracks, including 10 originals and covers of Peter McNutt and Tony Edwards' songs. Click on the link for more about this release, which is now available on CD and (originals only) MP3 DAM CD.
'Common Ground', Karen Kocher (film, 1994) - Andrew and I used material from 'electrophonic', 'Reflections' and 'Illusion of Competence', along with original new material to score this documentary on Barton Springs. This 30 minute film was recognized with a Best Regional Documentary by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the people who award the Oscars), along with other awards.
'decrepitude', Karl Rehn (cassette, 1995) - This release was compiled in honor of my 30th birthday, released 5/12/95 at the giant party we threw. It was a 90 minute cassette of a few new songs, demos of songs not used in previous released, collaborations with guest artists and live performances with my quartet.
